Ortho-Bionomy®

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle approach that works with the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems to relieve pain, tension and discomfort as well as encourage and support overall relaxation. Comfortable positions, gentle movements and light compression to the joints facilitate self-healing to support a relaxation response throughout your body.

Changes often include an improvement in flexibility, ease of movement and range of motion. Clients also report feeling renewed energy and enhanced well-being.

The practice and philosophy of Ortho-Bionomy evolved from the principles of osteopathy and martial arts, which assert that within each of us there exists an innate intelligence that knows how to maintain and restore our health. In essence, Ortho-Bionomy helps us to access our inner wisdom.

Ortho-Bionomy can be highly effective in working with chronic stress, muscle pain, joint pain and a wide variety of other symptoms that may be associated with postural, structural and energetic imbalances.

What is the role of the practitioner in Ortho-Bionomy?

As a practitioner, I work with you to identify areas of tension, restriction and pain, as well as areas of comfort and ease of movement. Using skilled touch to listen to your body's needs, I act as a facilitator to gently invite your body to rediscover ease, harmony and balance. Feedback about what you are noticing, feeling and experiencing in your body also helps to guide the session. Self-care and awareness exercises may also be recommended to support changes that occur during a session.

What happens in an Ortho-Bionomy session?

Each session is designed to meet your individual needs as we work together to locate reflex points, explore patterns of movement and identify comfortable positions. While most of the session is conducted on a massage table, sessions may also include sitting, standing, moving, and instruction for self-care and awareness exercises.

Sessions are generally one hour in length and wearing loose comfortable clothing is optimal.

Does Ortho-Bionomy help chronic pain?

Yes, clients with chronic pain often respond well to Ortho-Bionomy. This includes joint pain and muscle pain that is either isolated or part of a larger pattern, such as fibromyalgia. Ortho-Bionomy is also helpful for acute pain, as well as recovery from injury and preparation for and recovery from surgery.

How does Ortho-Bionomy help relieve pain?

Ortho-Bionomy works through a network of self-correcting reflexes located in joints, muscles and other tissues that include the proprioceptive system. The proprioceptive system monitors and coordinates the location of all the muscles, joints and bones as conditions change from moment to moment.

Ortho-Bionomy uses touch and movement to initiate contact with these self-correcting reflexes, which relay information through the nervous system to the brain. This new information may result in the release of stress and pain patterns. In this way, Ortho-Bionomy promotes self-correction and facilitates your body's innate ability to release pain and restore balance.

When working to relieve pain, self-care and awareness exercises may also be recommended to support changes that occur during a session.
